I am pleased that you are considering entering into a professional counseling relationship with me. To enhance the importance of trust, I want to share with you my professional beliefs, background, and, most importantly, your rights. Counseling is conducted in various ways, depending on the counselor. As my client, you have the right to know my qualifications, methods, and mutual expectations of our professional relationship. The information presented here is provided to help you decide if my services are suitable for your needs at this time. Please discuss any questions or concerns you may have before we begin our session. Qualifications: I obtained my Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2009. I am licensed in the state of North Carolina as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor (LCMHCS - #8329) by the North Carolina Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors (NCBLCMHC). Additionally, I am a National Board of Certified Counselors (NCC - #227001). Additionally, to keep current with various changes in the field of Counseling and mental health, I maintain memberships in numerous professional associations including, the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the American College Counseling Association (ACCA), the North Carolina Counseling Association (NCCA). As a professional counselor, I adhere to the ethical codes put forth by the American Counseling Association in 2014. As it pertains to years working in the counseling field, I have worked as a professional counselor for over 20 years and have experience working in a variety of settings. I have worked in the field of academic/school counseling, mental health counseling, private practice, and college/university counseling. For the past 13 years I have served on the Counseling staff at Davidson College. Counseling Background: Counseling is a collective effort between the individual and the counselor to help the individual draw from their natural strength and resources to accomplish a personal desire or goal. I believe that individuals come to Counseling because they are seeking something to be different in their lives. They may want to change their personal or family situation, solve a problem, or bring about a healthier balance in their lives. It is in the counseling process that individuals, families, and couples have a safe and nurturing environment to self-examine very challenging and sometimes painful issues to bring about change. My area of experience has been with individuals within the area of Anger Management, Anxiety, Attention Deficit Disorder, Border Personality, Chemical Dependence, Dependency, Depression, Grief/Loss, Intimate Relationship Conflicts, Low Self- Esteem, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and other traumatic events. Additionally, my experience includes working with individuals, families, adults, adolescents, persons of color, and couples. Confidentiality: All of our communication becomes part of the clinical record, which is accessible to you upon request. I will keep confidential anything you say as part of our counseling relationship, with the following exceptions: (a) you direct me in writing to disclose information to someone else, (b) it is determined you are a danger to yourself or others (including child or elder abuse), (c) I am ordered by a court to disclose information, (d) If you desire to seek reimbursement from a managed care company, the disclosure of confidential information may be required for reimbursement, (e) In case of a Medical Emergency, or (f) These rights are waived if accusations of misconduct are brought. However, even under these circumstances, only essential information will be revealed, and as much as possible, you will be informed before confidentiality is broken. In the event, the client is a minor, parents or legal guardians may be included in the counseling process as appropriate. Still, measures will be taken to safeguard confidentiality, always acting in the best interest of the client.
Anchored Hope Counseling
Are you are living in a constant state of worry? Are you a couple who is sinking into a cycle of conflict that you can’t escape, or a Christian who feels lost and seeking spiritual guidance? Then Anchored Hope Counseling is the place for you. My counseling philosophy can be summarized in the name "Anchored Hope," which was inspired by Hebrews 6:19; a verse that teaches that hope for healing can be steadfast and anchors us. With secure hope, we may not always see how the healing will come but we know that it will come through faith. To me, counseling is a way to direct people to hope so that they can experience joy and wholeness. Clients describe me as empathetic, encouraging, and challenging. Through tailored sessions, my goal is to help clients achieve a steadfast hope in their lives: an anchored confidence in themselves and their relationships, and an understanding that they can be “ok” in the face of storms. Counseling does not make life itself better because hard times are inevitable. Instead, I want counseling to equip you with the skills and strength to know you can handle challenges as they come; skills that provide an anchor of hope. If you are struggling in the storm of life and are in need of hope, please reach out to Anchored Hope Counseling today.

"I feel broken and I'm pissed about it." You were independent, high achieving, organized. Then you got the medical diagnosis, and everything changed. If you have been through a stressful or traumatic medical illness, you know firsthand the challenges of building a care team that you trust and coming into a new relationship with your body. My role is to partner with you as you face these challenges. If you are caregiving for individuals as they move through physical changes, it can be difficult to find balance. I can help you find your footing as you navigate caring for self and other, face difficult medical decisions, or move through anticipatory grief in the context of potentially complex relationship dynamics. "I just want to get back to normal." "What does it even mean to 'live with' this? How can they say that?" "This is happening on top of everything else! I don't have time to slow down, I'm in pain, and I can't sleep." "I had trauma before. This just makes dealing with it harder." These thoughts and reactions are not uncommon. Individualized, trauma-informed psychotherapy can help. To learn more, please reach out for a free phone consultation. I am happy to address any questions or concerns you may have prior to initiating therapy, and I look forward to meeting you soon.

I received my Bachelor's degree in Psychology and my Master's in School Counseling. I worked as a counselor in the school system for 28 years before deciding to practice therapy full-time. Hey Hey! I'm Kayla (she/they)! Before I bore you with the therapy jargon, how about you get to know a little bit about who I am as a person first? If you catch me out around town, I am either bopping to the music in my headphones, reading, at a festival, or talking to a random stranger about their entire life story! I am a proud native of Charlotte, NC! I grew up helping out at my family’s restaurant, Sub One Hoagie House [shameless plug hehe] located in Uptown Charlotte. I can remember feeling so cool and infatuated by the idea that I had the opportunity to be so close to the Bank of America Stadium nearly every day of the week; which, until recently, I had still been calling the Panther’s Football Stadium… still sounds cooler to me! I have a passion for all things music; whether it be attending concerts, making music, or creating playlists that I am too scared to share with anyone else! In fact, I used to be one of the lead singers in a band where I'd travel on the weekends performing at weddings and other various corporate sponsored events. I've also been playing drums for over a decade and picked up guitar a few years ago; YouTube really comes in handy! I come from a very musical family if you hadn’t picked up on that :) Incorporating music, art, poetry/lyrics in sessions with clients is something I've seen to be very valuable, allowing my clients to tap into reflection and feeling that may otherwise be hard to express with just "regular ole'" talk-therapy! Those who know me would describe me as quirky, bubbly, and someone who has the ability to carry on a conversation with anyone, including a brick wall ☺ I love meeting new people while also continuing to build and foster the close relationships I already have. *Potentially* Fun Facts: - I like sunsets over sunrises. - I like music. -I like dancing. -I like talking. -I like the ocean. -I like mountainous terrain. -I like coffee. -I like smiling. -I like my dog (sometimes). - I like random facts. Okay.. Now, for the REAL reason you're here! I seek to provide a brave and encouraging space where clients are encouraged to speak from their own diverse and multicultural backgrounds, aiding in the ability to become more self-aware, self-accepting, and self-motivated. I co-create with clients to build a strong therapeutic relationship, discuss barriers to change, building self-encouragement, discussing techniques for change, and goal setting. I hope to help clients recognize limiting belief patterns and replace them with more functional and positive patterns of belief, behavior, and emotional expression. My approach to counseling combines elements of both Interpersonal and Developmental Psychotherapy, which focuses on the intersectionalities of a client’s development and their present behaviors, to help clients work toward productive change. Together, we will explore mutually agreed upon goals and treatment plans. Though it is impossible to guarantee any specific results regarding your goals or treatment plan, I assure you that I'll remain determined and attuned to your individual needs so you are able to achieve the best possible outcome. I welcome the opportunity to have a virtual meet and greet with you to determine whether we would be a great fit for one another in establishing a therapeutic relationship!
