At Roots & Refuge Center, we provide mental health services and healing spaces that support people through community care and cultural understanding. We offer soul-centered therapy for those who are displaced, seeking spiritual growth, or showing great resilience. Angelique uses a blend of ACT, somatic-based approaches, Emotionally Centered CBT (ECBT), DBT, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Structural Family Therapy. These modalities help build emotional resilience, navigate life transitions, and repair relational systems, all through a trauma-informed and culturally grounded lens. She also integrates faith-based and spiritual practices when they align with the client’s beliefs, offering a space that honors both clinical wisdom and ancestral or spiritual healing. She has the most training and experience treating trauma-related conditions, particularly in refugee and immigrant populations. Her work centers around grief, PTSD, cultural and racial identity, faith-integrated therapy, and life transitions. Angelique’s approach is grounded in trauma-informed care, cultural humility, and a deep commitment to community healing.

I am here to support you as we create a safe space for you to explore your journey and goals. I practice from a compassionate, trauma-informed, and strength-based approach. I offer a mix of Somatic, Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and mindfulness skills to assist you to connect with your body, identify your thinking patterns, be more aware of your feelings, develop better coping and communication skills, and find your own solutions. Taking the first step and starting therapy can be scary. I am so glad you are ready to embark on this journey towards change. I offer services in Portuguese, Spanish, English, and welcome clients of any ethnicity, gender and sexual identity. Hello! Thank you for taking the first steps in finding a therapist who will be a good fit for you. Making changes can be difficult (and scary!), and my job is to help support you on that journey. I view therapy as a collaborative endeavor in which the client and therapist are partners working towards a common goal. As the process unfolds, clients develop skills and learn strategies that they can apply not only to their current challenges, but to future difficulties that might present. Eventually, therapy is no longer needed, because clients have the tools they need to move forward on their own. I look forward to meeting you, and I hope that I can help you improve your life in the ways that you are seeking.

For me, becoming a therapist was really about wanting to support people through difficult and sometimes lonely parts of their lives. I’ve always been drawn to deep conversations and understanding what makes people feel seen, heard, and safe. Over time, I realized that being present for someone-without judgement-can be incredibly powerful. I wanted to offer that space where people can explore their story, grow, and feel more connected to themselves. It’s a privilege to be part of that process. My priority is to create a space where you can be fully yourself-without pressure, judgment, or expectation. I’ll be listening closely not just to your words, but also to what’s underneath-your emotions, your experiences, your patterns. I’ll check in with you often to make sure I’m understanding you the way you want to be understood, not just how I interpret things. We’ll move at a pace that feels safe for you, and if there’s ever a moment you don’t feel heard or something doesn’t feel right, I want to know. This is your space, and your voice matters here. In the beginning, it’s really about getting to know you-what’s going on in your life, what’s important to you, and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. I won’t push you to share anything before you’re ready. We’ll move at a pace that feels right for you. Building trust takes time, so I focus on showing up consistently, being real with you, and making sure you feel safe to be yourself. I’ll check in with you often about how things are going-what’s helpful, what’s not, what you want more or less of. This a therapeutic partnership, and I want it to feel like we’re working together-not me telling you what to do, but us exploring things side by side.

Clinical Social Work/Therapist

Physically in California (San Francisco for those looking for in person) and able to meet with folks in Massachusetts (long story), I've been in practice for 11 years! I think therapy should be an empowering, straightforward, and welcoming experience. Forget the old-fashioned, “misty magical” and old sage men and women with glasses nodding and asking, “Hmm, hmm, okay…..and how do you feel about that?” I want our work together to be full of self-reflection and action with you in the driver’s seat. I view my role to be one of support and encouragement, but by no means do I have all the answers. I’ll be active in the room (or screen!) but I don’t view myself as “the expert” in your experience or your future. You are the star of your show; my role is to help you attain a way of life that’s better than it is now. The core values that guide my therapy work are kindness, autonomy, self-respect, and compassion. I believe we need to have respect for ourselves and compassion for others and that people have the agency and autonomy to make those decisions and do good to one another. When we respect ourselves and each other, I believe that breeds kindness. I aim to provide care to my clients by supporting them in their journeys rather than laying the path of bread crumbs out for them. Why would I interrupt and take away from your power? I believe that you are an expert on your life and have many strengths and skills, likely more than you realize. I see my job as helping you discover and start using these skills more effectively to have positive impacts on your life.
